The sea

The Adriatic sea is a 20 minute drive from the trulli houses. You can choose between sandy beaches or rocky coves, or simply stroll around the little fishing ports. Some of the beaches are equipped as "lidos" with shaded car parking, showers and possible hire of sunbeds and sun shades, at a modest charge. All lidos have handy bars selling drinks, rolls and ice-creams.

South of the resort of Torre Canne the beaches tend to be sandy ones, northern ones are rockier but there is a mixture everywhere and we recommend you try different places and then opt for a favourite one for the rest of your holiday. The most energetic visitors explore all the coast around the heel but the problem with that is there are just too many lovely places for one lifetime.

Fishing ports

The local fish is called ‘pesce azzurro’, blue fish and it includes many varieties including sardines and anchovies and all delicious and so fresh...
You can eat in the many fish restaurants along the coast or buy it in Savelletri and take it home to barbeque or fry. September means huge fat tuna fish bought up by local families who then bottle it.
